Assembly and Operation

The Gotco Series 150 Releasing and Circulating Overshot is an external catch fishing tool designed to retrieve tubular items from the well bore. It is rugged, economical, and easy to use. Gotco overshots come with a wide range of available accessories. These fishing tools have proven to be the most versatile and reliable in the field.

Spiral Catch Equipment – Place the type A packer (with inside lip pointed up) in overshot bowl between upper thread and helix. (Note: The lower end of overshot bowl has a longitudinal slot cut into helix.) Assemble top sub to overshot bowl. Thread spiral grapple into left-hand helix in overshot bowl. Stop threading when the grapple has fully entered the helix and the grapple tang has aligned with the keyway in the bowl. Slide the grapple control, tang end first, into overshot bowl until the grapple control tang slides beside tang on grapple. Grapple tang also slides into slot in grapple control. Now assemble the guide to overshot bowl. Basket Catch Equipment – Assemble top sub to overshot bowl. Thread basket grapple into left-hand helix in overshot bowl. Stop threading when the grapple has fully entered the helix and the slot in grapple has aligned with keyway in the bowl. The inside lip on inner seal must point up in the grapple control. Outer seal must be placed around lower end of grapple control. Now slide grapple control into bowl (tang end first) so that the tang engages the slots in both the bowl and basket grapple. Assemble guide to overshot bowl. Operation – The overshot should be equipped with the proper size grapple and related equipment. Hole size or damage to the fish may necessitate using an oversized guide, wall hook guide, extension sub, or milling shoe. See Optional Components. Engagement and Retrieval of Fish – Attach the overshot to the bottom of the fishing string and run in the hole. When the overshot nears the top of the fish, engage it by slowly rotating to the right while gradually lowering the fishing string. To pull up the fish, release any right-hand torque in the fishing string. Circulation through the fish may be used to help retrieve it. If applying torque to the fish, main-

Construction The basic assembly consists of a top sub, bowl, and standard guide. The internal components are used to establish a secure grip on the fish to retrieve it easily. The selection of these components is determined by the diameter of the fish to be retrieved. When the fish diameter approaches the maximum catch of the overshot, a spiral grapple is required. This must also be equipped with a spiral grapple control and type A packer. When the diameter is approximately 1/2 inch (or more) under the maximum catch of the overshot, a basket grapple is used. It must be assembled with either a basket grapple control or a mill control packer.

tain an upward strain while the fishing string rotates; this will maintain grapple engagement. Release of Fish – Bump down the full weight of fishing string. Rotate to the right while picking up slowly. The left-hand wicker threads on the inner surface of the grapple will allow the grapple to unscrew from the fish.

Standard Components Top sub – The top sub is the uppermost component of the assembly. It is equipped with a box connection, as specified by the customer, to assure proper make-up with the fishing string. Bowl – The bowl is the major working component of the overshot. The upper end of the bowl is threaded for assembly with the top sub. The lower end is threaded for assembly with the standard guide. A helix-shaped configuration inside the overshot bowl provides a tapered spiral surface on which the grapple will be assembled. Once the grapple has engaged the fish, an upward strain will cause the grapple to be compressed by the movement of the matching tapers. The greater the pull, the stronger the grip. The strain is evenly distributed over the entire working surface of the bowl and the grapple. This minimizes any possible damage to the bowl or the fish. Standard guide – The standard guide is the lowermost component of the assembly. It guides the fish into the overshot, allowing the internal gripping mechanism to properly engage and grip the fish. The guide also prohibits the entry of a fish that exceeds the maximum catch of the overshot. This minimizes any possible damage to the overshot assembly. Spiral Grapple – The spiral grapple is a left-hand helix that conforms to the inside of the overshot bowl. Specially hardened wicker threads assure a positive grip to engage the fish securely. Basket Grapple – The basket grapple is a slotted cylinder

with an external helix that conforms to the interior of the overshot bowl. Specially hardened wicker threads assure a positive grip to engage the fish securely. Three types of basket grapples are available: • The standard basket grapple is used to catch a fish with a uniform outside diameter. The fish es completely through the grapple during engagement. This type of grapple is standard equipment. • The long catch stop basket grapple has an internal shoulder at its upper end to prevent the fish from ing completely through the grapple. When engaging a coupling or upset section of a tool t, this shoulder positions the control packer for optimum packoff around the fish. • The short catch stop basket grapple has two sets of internal wickers cut on different diameters. It is used to engage a coupling with a short section of pipe pro-

truding above it. The upper or smaller diameter wickers catch the pipe above the collar, providing a stop against the coupling so that it can be caught by the lower set of wickers and packed-off by the control packer. Grapple Controls – Grapple controls transmit torque from the overshot bowl to the grapple while allowing the grapple to move vertically inside the bowl. • Spiral grapple controls are furnished without milling teeth or a pack-off mechanism. • Basket grapple controls can be furnished plain, with pack-off capabilities, or with milling teeth and pack-off capabilities. Pack-off Mechanism – A pack-off mechanism is necessary if circulation is required during the fishing operation. Packing off assures circulation through, rather than around, the fish. The packoff system employed will depend on the type of grapple selected. If the overshot is equipped with a

spiral grapple, a type A packer is used to seal between the overshot bowl and the fish. If a basket grapple is used, pack-off is achieved by the inner seal on the control packer.

Series 150 Overshot Accessories –

fish, centralize it, then properly guide the fish into the bowl. Oversized Guide – When the hole size is considerably larger than the diameter of the fish, there may be sufficient room for the overshot to alongside of the fish without engaging it. In this case, an oversized guide can be used to assure fish engagement and to properly guide the fish into the overshot. Extension Subs – When the upper portion of the fish is damaged or otherwise cannot be engaged, an extension sub can be used to allow the overshot to be lowered further over the fish to assure proper engagement and pack-off. The extension sub is assembled between the top sub and the bowl, and is available in lengths from 24 to 60 inches. Overshot Milling Shoe – Used in place of the standard guide, the overshot milling shoe allows the top of the fish to be milled clean. This removes excessive burring or jagged edges and assures proper grapple engagement and pack-off. Overshot Mill Extension – The mill extension is used with the standard guide. It is assembled between the bowl and guide and, like the overshot milling shoe, allows the top of the fish to be milled clean. Hollow Mill Container and Mill Insert – The Hollow Mill Container provides a means to dress the fish and recover the fish with a standard Overshot in one trip. The Hollow Mill container is located between the Overshot Bowl and Standard Guide. A Mill Insert, dressed with Tungsten Carbide to the desired milling diameter, is placed inside the lowermost section of the Hollow Mill Container and is secured in place by the Standard Guide. This will allow for the fish to be dressed prior to entering the Overshot for recovery.

Lock Rings & Spacer Rings – A lock ring assembly can be used to prevent unscrewing of the top sub from the bowl during left-hand rotation of the fishing string. Lock rings come in pairs and are assem-

bled between the top sub and the bowl. When selecting a spiral grapple and type A packer, the spacer ring must be used with the lock ring assembly to keep the type A packer in the correct position.

Series 70 Short Catch Overshots

Series 70 Short-Catch Overshot The Gotco Series 70 Short-Catch Overshot is an external catch fishing tool designed to retrieve tubular from the well bore when the top of the fish is too short to be engaged with a standard overshot. Designed with the grapple positioned at the extreme lower end of the tool, this overshot can engage a fish with a very short top end.

Construction


The assembly consists of a top sub, bowl, basket grapple, and basket grapple control. These components function in the same manner as those in the standard Gotco Series 150 Releasing and Circulating Overshot.

Screw basket grapple into bowl so that control slot in grapple aligns with slot in bowl. Slide grapple control into bowl until tang engages both the bowl slot and grapple slot. Make up top sub to bowl. Engagement & Retrieval of Fish – Attach the overshot to the bottom of the fishing string and run into hole. When the overshot nears the top of the fish, gradually lower the fishing string while slowly maintaining the right-hand rotation. When the fish is engaged, release right-hand torque and pull. Release of Fish – Bump down on the overshot. Then rotate the fishing string to the right while picking up slowly.

Construction The Multi-Catch Overshot consists of three external parts: the top sub, bowl, and guide. The durable construction of the bowl provides maximum strength and pulling power. The slip, constructed of heat treated steel and hardened to ensure the best possible grip, allows the overshot to catch a varied range of outside diameters.

Assembly and Operation The overshot must be properly assembled and dressed with the appropriate multi-range slip. When reaching the top of the fish, slowly rotate the fishing string and lower the overshot over the fish to the desired depth. To engage the fish, raise the fishing string and pull. The Multi-Catch Overshot is not designed to be released after engaging the fish. Therefore, it should only be run below fishing strings designed with enough strength to pull or detach the fish it engages.

Series 10 and Series 20 Sucker Rod Overshots The Gotco, Series 10 and 20 Sucker Rod Overshots are small, durable Overshots for retrieving sucker rods, couplings and other items from inside tubing strings. The Gotco, Series 10 Sucker Rod Overshots are designed to retrieve Sucker Rod Boxes up to 2” O.D. inside of 27/8” tubing and up to 15/8” O.D. inside of 23/8” tubing. The Gotco Series 20 Sucker Rod Overshots are designed for short catch retrieval conditions. These tools engage the tubular portion of the fish that is too short for retrieving with a standard Overshot

Construction The Series 10 Sucker Rod Overshot consists of a Top Sub, Bowl, Grapple, and a Guide. The internal components are used to establish a secure grip on the fish to retrieve it easily. Depending on the diameter of the fish to be retrieved, a Spiral Grapple or a Basket Grapple will be used. When the fish diameter approaches the maximum catch of the Overshot a Spiral Grapple is required. When a Spiral Grapple is used, a Control Guide must also be used on the tool. When the fish diameter is substantially under the maximum catch limits of the Overshot a Basket Grapple is used. This assembly will require a Basket Grapple Control and a Plain Guide. The Series 20 Short Catch Sucker Rod Overshot consists of a Top Sub, Bowl, Basket Grapple and a Basket Grapple Control. The arrangement of the internal parts is slightly different from the Series 10 Overshot in that the Grapple Control is placed at the top of the tool between the Top Sub and the Basket Grapple. This

will allow for the exposed portion of the fish to enter the Basket Grapple further since the Grapple is now located in the lowermost position in the Bowl. Assembly and Operation The Overshot should be dressed with the proper size and type of Grapple and related equipment. Makeup the Overshot on the fishing string and run into the hole. When the Overshot nears the top of the fish, engage it by slowly rotating to the right while gradually lowering the Overshot over the fish. Release any right-hand torque out of the fishing string and pull on the fish by elevating the fishing string.

To Release from the Fish Bump down the full weight of fishing string. Rotate to the right while picking up slowly. The left hand wicker threads on the inner surface of the grapple will allow the grapple to unscrew from the fish. To Release from the retrieved fish, follow this same procedure while securing the fish below the Overshot

External Catch – Die Collars

Die Collar The Gotco Die Collar is an external catch fishing tool designed to retrieve tubular from the well bore.

Construction


The Die Collar is manufactured from high grade alloy and specially heat treated. The hardened cutting teeth (wickers) are machined on a shallow taper (approximately 3/4 inch per foot) to provide an excellent grip and positive engagement. Plain watertight wicker's are furnished as standard equipment. Fluted wickers are also available on request. Die Collars are available with plain, lipped, or mill type bottom, or with threaded bottom for attaching a standard lipped or oversized guide.

Assemble the Die Collar to the bottom of the fishing string. Run in the hole until reaching the fish. Apply minimum weight (less than one point) and rotate sufficiently to allow the wicker threads to become embedded in the exterior surface of the fish. Caution: Be careful not to apply excessive weight or to rotate excessively. This could cause damage to the wickers. Once the fish has been securely engaged, it can be lifted from the hole.

Standard Components A standard or oversized guide can be assembled to the bottom of the Die Collar, if it has been ordered with the optional lower thread. When the hole size is considerably larger than the diameter of the fish, there may be sufficient room for the Die Collar to alongside of the fish without engaging it. In this case, an oversized guide can be used to assure fish engagement and to properly guide the fish into the Die Collar. Standard Die Collars are supplied with right-hand threads. Left-hand threads are available on request at no extra charge. When extra long Die Collars (those having a catching range considerably larger than the standard sizes) are requested, it may be necessary to provide a two or three piece welded assembly. The Taper Tap is manufactured from high grade alloy and specially heat treated. The basic Taper Tap is a single piece construction. The hardened cutting teeth (wickers) are carbo-nitrided and machined on a shallow taper (approximately 3/4 inch per foot) to provide an excellent grip for light duty pick-up jobs. Plain watertight wickers are furnished as standard equipment. Fluted wickers are also available on request. Taper Taps are furnished either plain or threaded for skirts.


Optional Components Skirt – The skirt is used when the Taper Tap has been threaded for a skirt. The skirt is assembled to the Taper Tap and will assist in guiding the fish for proper engagement and retrieval. Several types of skirts can be ordered; plain end, lipped end, or threaded end with a thread protector for adding standard oversized guide. Assemble the Taper Tap to the bottom of the fishing string. Run in the hole until reaching the fish. Apply minimum weight (less than one point) and rotate sufficiently to allow the wicker threads to be embedded into the interior surface of the fish. (Be careful not to apply excessive weight or to rotate excessively. This could cause damage to the wickers.) Once the fish has been securely engaged, it can be lifted from the hole.

Grapple Releasing Spear The Gotco Grapple Releasing Spear is an internal catch fishing tool designed to retrieve tubular from the well bore. It is a rugged, dependable, and inexpensive device. The simple design assures positive engagement throughout the fishing operation, is easy to release and re-engage if necessary and may be run in conjunction with other equipment such as pack-off attachments and internal cutting tools.

The basic Gotco Grapple Releasing Spear consists of a mandrel, a grapple, a bull nose nut, and a release ring. The mandrel is made of specially heat treated high strength alloy steel; and may be ordered either as a flush type to enter completely into a fish or as a shoulder type to provide a positive landing position on top of the fish. Size and type of the upper box connection is provided according to customer’s exact specifications.

Assembly and Operation First screw the grapple onto the mandrel. (Note: This is a lefthand thread.) Slip the release ring onto the end of the mandrel and make up the nut. Screw the grapple down the mandrel hand tight against the release ring. This puts the tool into the run-in position. Make up spear to bottom of fishing string. Run in and position the spear in the fish, then rotate the mandrel one full turn to the left. The grapple should now be engaged. Pulling straight up will cause the tapers on the mandrel to expand the grapple and will allow the grapple to bite into the fish. To disengage the grapple, bump down and rotate to the right several turns. Pulling straight up should free the spear. When coming out of the fish, continue to rotate slowly to the right.

Standard Components Mandrel – The mandrel has an upper box type connection cut according to customer’s specifications. The lower end is threaded to accept the bull nose nut or can also accept a mill nose, sub, or side hill nut. The central body of

the mandrel has a helical tapered configuration where the grapple is installed. This tapered O.D. matches the I.D. of the grapple and provides the basic mechanism for proper engagement and retrieval. Grapple – Each grapple is machined to fit a specific size and weight of pipe, tubing, or casing. This assures maximum surface engagement and minimum fish distortion. Bull Nose Nut with release ring – A Bull Nose Nut and release ring are standard components of the Grapple Releasing Spear.

Optional Components Segment Spear Grapples – The 85/8-inch and 95/8-inch spears can be fitted with a segmented grapple assembly. With this assembly, the 85/8-inch spear can be used to pull up to 133/8-inch casing. The 95/8-inch tool can be used to pull up to 20-inch casing. This greatly enhances the spear’s usefulness. Mill Nose, Side Hill and Sub Nuts – These components are available as accessories. The mill nose nut can be used to clean the top of the fish in case it is badly distorted and obstructs the entrance of the spear. The side hill nut design allows the spear to be inserted when the fish is partially embedded in the side of the hole. The sub nut allows additional tools to be assembled below the spear. Pack-off Attachment – A pack-off assembly is available to attach below the spear when using the sub nut. Stop Sub – A shouldered stop sub can be ordered to convert the flush type spear into a shouldered type. A stop ring can be added to increase the shouldered diameter.

Reverse Circulating Junk Basket The Gotco Reverse Circulating Junk Basket (RCB) is a junk retrieval tool designed to remove all types of objects from the bottom of the well bore. This superior tool removes such items as slips, hand tools, bit cones, and any other small pieces of junk from the well. The RCB uses reverse circulation to aid junk recovery. Construction The tool consists of a top sub, barrel assembly, catcher, and shoe. The barrel assembly con-

sists of an inner and outer barrel, valve seat, cup, and ball. A lift sub is also provided to assist in handling.

Assembly and Operation Make up the junk basket to the bottom of the string and run into the hole. When the tool is approximately 10 feet from the bottom of the hole, the ball is dropped down the drill pipe. The ball will position itself in the ball seat and reverse circulation will begin. Circulate and begin coring. Combined with the reverse circulation, this guarantees that any

junk on the bottom is pumped into the barrel and caught by the catcher assembly. The tool is removed from the hole after cutting 10 to 20 inches of core.

Optional Components and Accessories Shoes - Four types of shoes are available to fit the Reverse Circulating Junk Basket. Type A mill shoe is supplied as standard equipment with the cutting teeth dressed with hard metal and has side wings. The type A mill shoe is used where the formation is relatively soft and the fish is a loose piece. Type B mill shoe is equal in design to the type A shoe, however, it is hard faced with Gotcoloy a sintered tungsten carbide in an extremely tough matrix which will effectively and rapidly mill up junk during the fishing operation. This shoe will cut on O.D., I.D. and bottom. Type C mill shoe is also hard faced with Gotcoloy, however, is designed with a flat bottom, and

the Gotcoloy is placed on the inner face and the outer face. This design is used to mill up junk and is extremely effective for cutting cores. Type B or type C Gotcoloy dressed milling shoes are used if the formation is hard or if the fish is embedded in the formation. Use of these two designs also cuts away protruding excess metal to allow free entry of the junk into the basket. Finger Shoe - For retrieving loose junk on the bottom of the hole which may exceed the maximum catch of the RCB can be retrieved by use of a finger shoe assembly. The assembly consists of a shoe extension and the finger replacement. The entire assembly is used in place of a mill shoe. The fingers are designed to close in beneath the fish when slowly lowered during rotation. Finger replacements can be replaced easily and are very inexpensive. Magnet Inserts - The RCB can be easily converted to a fishing magnet by removing the catcher assembly and replacing it with a magnet insert. The insert still allows direct or reverse circulation and can be used with A, B or C type shoes, or special shoes designed to customer specifications. The magnet insert is the same design as the Gotco Fishing Magnet and by adding a top sub to the magnet insert, it can be used independently as a fishing magnet.

Junk Catchers – Jet Type Junk Basket

Construction

Jet Type Junk Basket The Gotco Jet Type Junk Basket is designed to recover objects from the bottom of the well bore. This superior tool removes items such as slips, hand tools, rock bit cones, and any other small pieces of junk from the well.

The tool consists of a top sub, jet barrel, lower barrel, jet assembly section, jets, ball seat, drop ball, shoe, and catcher assembly. A lift sub is available to assist in handling and for storage of the steel drop ball.

Make up the junk basket to the bottom of the string and run into the hole. (see figure 1) When the tool is approximately 4 to 6 feet off the bottom of the hole, circulation is initiated to wash the hole in order to retrieve junk. During this operation, the ball seat is secured in place within the upper portion of the jet pump head with shear pins. This seals off the reverse circulation jet ports providing full circulation through the entire length of the tool. The barrel, jet assembly, and junk catchers will be washed clean going into the hole while preparing for junk retrieval. When the tool is over the fish (junk), the steel drop ball is then dropped through the inside diameter and seats inside the ball seat. (see figure 2) When pump pressure is applied, the pins will shear

allowing the ball seat to drop down into the lower section of the jet pump head. The flow will now be directed out of the jet nozzles at an angle as to not washout the hole. Flow will then be directed downward and back up through the junk basket catcher, lower barrel, jet housing, around the jet nozzles, and back out of the jet barrel ports. Thus, creating reverse circulation and directing junk into the catcher assembly. The Jet Type Junk Basket can easily be converted to a standard Core Basket by simply removing the Jet Barrel and Jet Assembly and screwing the Lower Barrel directly to the Top Sub. O.D. Conversion and Accessories The Lower Barrel can be

replaced by an oversized barrel in order to adapt to a larger junk catcher assembly. There are four types of mill shoes available to fit the Jet Type Junk Basket. Type A, B, C, and the Finger Type Shoe. See standard Shoes in Reverse Circulation Junk Basket Section on page 22.

Core-Type Junk Basket The Gotco Core-Type Junk Basket is a junk retrieval tool designed to retrieve all types of objects from the bottom of the well bore. This easy-to-use tool removes such items as slips, hand tools, and bit cones. The basic assembly consists of a top sub, barrel, type A mill shoe, upper and lower catchers. Assembly and Operation Make up the core basket to the bottom of the string and run it in the hole to a point several feet from the bottom. With direct circulation, the coring action on the junk proceeds until a 24 inch core is cut. The fingers in the upper catcher break the core when an upward strain is applied to the string. The lower catcher fingers

then form a close-fitting basket that traps the core with its retrieved junk. As in the other junk basket designs, they are free to revolve within the shoe, thus eliminating finger breakage.

Junk Catchers – Fishing Magnet

Fishing Magnet The Gotco Fishing Magnet is a junk retrieval tool designed to effectively remove metal particles, shavings, and debris from the bottom of the well bore. The process of retrieving small, oddly shaped objects is one of the most frequent and most difficult fishing jobs. Typically, these objects are the result of bit failures that leave cones and cutters in the hole, or are an accumulation of mill cuttings, or are simply accidental droppings of unmillable objects into the hole. In these cases, the fish is nearly always an odd-shaped object that cannot be engaged in the normal manner. Fishing magnets successfully remove these small objects from the hole bottom. The tool’s design incorporates generous circulation holes that wash away the cuttings and other debris that otherwise would prevent with the magnet. Fishing magnets can be run on either wire line or pipe.

Construction The fishing magnet is constructed from steel specially selected for its ability to conduct the necessary magneto-motive forces. The magnet element is one of the most powerful permanent magnets available. Used properly, it will never lose its

charge. A variety of shoes are available to accommodate any retrieval situation. Caution: Magnets are charged while in the assembled state and should not be disassembled. Disassembly is dangerous and can cause serious injury due to the extreme forces generated by the magnet element.

Assembly and Operation No assembly is required other than selecting the desired shoe and installing it on the lower end of the magnet assembly. Make up the magnet assembly to the bottom of the fishing string. Run in the hole, and hold the magnet 6 to 12 inches above the fish. Circulate generously to wash away cuttings. Reduce circulation, lower the magnet to the fish, and rotate slightly to obtain good . Cut off circulation and lift the magnet from the hole.

Guides – A flush guide is assembled as standard equipment. Lipped guides and mill guides are also available. The lipped guide assists the operator in centralizing the fish to assure with the magnet. The mill guide enables the operator to mill any soft formation or settling, thus freeing the debris at the bottom of the hole.

Wire Line Adapter – An adapter is available to install between the magnet and the cable head or socket. Magnet Charger – The Gotco Magnet Charger provides the highest strength possible for recharging your fishing magnets. While magnets should not lose their effectiveness during normal handling and operation, conditions exist which can reduce their charge. Welding a magnet subjects the magnet circuit to electrical current which can adversely affect the charge. Similarly, storing the magnet in the vicinity of electric motors, or bringing magnets too close to each other can be detrimental to the magnet’s strength. Recharging is quick and simple. Impression Block


The Gotco Impression Block is an accessory tool used to accurately determine the dimensions and configuration of the upper end of a fish as well as to check its condition and position in the well bore. The soft lead lower end of the impression block captures an impression of the fish upon making . Impression blocks are manufactured with a pin connection up and a layer of soft lead on the lower end of the tool. Circulation holes will be provided on request.

Make up the impression block to the bottom of the fishing string. Run into hole until impression block is near top of fish. Slowly lower pipe until making with fish. Do not rotate. Apply weight to impression block and then pull out of hole. The impression made will assist the operator in determining what tools are needed to prepare and retrieve the fish.

Junk Catchers – Wireline Spear

Wireline Spear The Gotco Wireline Spear is a simple easy to use tool designed to retrieve wire line and wire rope from the well bore.

Construction


Spears are constructed of high quality steel for strength and durability. The upper end of the tool has a box connection and fishing neck. Two types of spears are available. The standard wireline spear is provided with welded barbs. The collapsible wireline spear has retracting barbs to allow easier entry into the wire without compacting it further. Serration’s on the spear shank, inside the collapsible barb cavity, further enhances the ability of the Gotco Wireline Spear to retain its grip on the cable while tripping out.

Make-up the spear to the bottom of the string. Run in the hole. Upon reaching the wire to be retrieved, slowly lower the spear, allowing the steel barbs to engage the wire. It may be necessary to lift and lower several times to be sure the spear has sufficiently engaged the wire. Slight rotation may also be required to loosen the wire if it is severely compacted. The spear may then be lifted from the hole, bringing the loose wire with it.

Fishing Jar The Gotco Hydraulic Fishing Jar is an easy-to-use accessory tool that assists in various operations such as fishing, testing, coring, reaming, and washover. Designed to be installed in the string above the fishing tool assembly, it allows the operator to deliver an upward blow to the equipment installed in the string below the jar. This is particularly helpful when the string is stuck or restricted and cannot be lifted only by pulling. Construction


Fishing jars are constructed from high-strength, impact-resistant alloy. Specially heat treated to provide the ultimate in toughness and durability, this field proven tool is simple and easy to operate.

For fishing operations the jar should be installed below a string of drill collars. (For other applications, see technical manual.) Lower the string and engage the fish. Once engaged, simply pull upward, stretching the drill string.

Accessory Tools

The jar will begin to open slowly as the piston meters the hydraulic fluid in the jar. Once the jar has opened approximately half of its full stroke, the piston will release and the jar will suddenly open fully, releasing the energy stored in the stretched drill string, delivering the desired impact. The amount of impact is determined by the amount of stretch applied to the string. This provides the operator with complete control over the impact applied. No adjustments to the tool are required. Once the jar has been tripped it can be quickly reset by lowering the string and allowing the jar to close. Heavy-duty splines allow for full torque transmission at any time. For maximum effectiveness, also use a jar impact amplifier.

Accessory Tools – Bumper Sub

Bumper Sub The Gotco Fishing Bumper Sub is a highly dependable accessory tool. Suitable for all fishing operations, it has proven to be especially successful in surviving harsh down-hole applications. The tool design allows full torque and unrestricted fluid circulation at all times. Standard stroke is 20 inches; other stroke lengths are available on request. Typical operations include releasing stuck drill pipe, drill collars, tubing, test tools, and safety ts. Also, the fishing bumper sub functions well when used with an overshot or spear.

Construction The fishing bumper sub is constructed from specially heat treated high-strength alloy steel to withstand severe stress resulting from tension, jarring, and torque. A double-seal piston assures full circulation through the tool during fishing operations.


Bumper Sub

The fishing bumper sub is installed in the fishing string immediately above the fishing tool or safety t. To apply a sharp downward blow, mark the pipe at surface to indicate open and closed positions of bumper sub. Raise fishing string to open bumper sub and allow for some additional pipe stretch. Drop string sharply and stop with the brake approximately 4 to 6 inches above the closed position of bumper sub. As the fishing string springs downward, the bumper sub will deliver a sharp downward blow. To apply a solid downward blow, raise fishing string to open bumper sub plus exert a slight stretch in string. Drop full weight of pipe without braking to deliver a strong downward blow. To apply an upward blow, mark pipe at surface to indicate open and closed positions of bumper sub. Raise fishing string to open bumper sub plus exert moderate strength in string. Drop string by the amount of pipe stretch only and catch it with the brake. As pipe recoils at the bottom of the hole, the bumper sub will deliver a sharp upward blow.

Jar Impact Amplifier The Gotco Jar Impact Amplifier is a vital accessory tool designed to be run with the Gotco Hydraulic Fishing Jar. It will accelerate the upward motion of the drill collars and the fishing jar allowing the operator to apply significantly greater impact to the fish. This is particularly helpful in deviated holes where friction may reduce the impact of the jar or in shallow holes where there is insufficient string length to provide adequate stretch to the running string. Accessory Tools

Construction Manufactured from high strength alloy and heat treated for maximum toughness, the jar impact amplifier is both rugged and reliable. Heavy splines allow the application of full torque and a generous through bore offers unrestricted circulation at all times.

Operation The jar impact amplifier should be located in the string immediately above the drill collars. No presetting is required. When a stretch is applied to the string, the jar impact amplifier fluids are compressed, storing additional energy. When the jar trips, this energy is released. The tool will automatically reset, each time the jar trips, and will continue to operate as many times as necessary to free the fish.

Service Kit A service kit is required to properly redress and fill the hydraulic jar. One kit will service all Gotco Jars and Jar Impact Amplifiers.

Setting Tools A mandrel body setting tool is required for each size of jar impact amplifier. Setting tools are used to properly position and set the standard copper back-up and non-extrusion rings.

The Lubricated Bumper Sub is composed of six major parts: the Mandrel, Knocker, Washpipe, Middle Body, Mandrel Body and Washpipe Body. The critical seal points of the Mandrel and Washpipe are equipped with a seal-ring assembly consisting of an Oring, Non-Extrusion Ring and Seal Protector Ring. This Seal Ring set keeps the diametrical clearance at the seal points to an absolute minimum as hydraulic pressure is applied from either direction in the tool. This greatly increases the life of the O-Ring and seal set by prohibiting O-Ring extrusion.

Drilling Safety t The Gotco Safety t is manufactured to provide safe and easy release and make-up whenever disengagement becomes necessary. This dependable, field-tough tool is designed to transmit torque in either direction when placed in the drill, fishing, or washover string. Components


The safety t consists of a pin section, a box section, and a friction ring. The internal connection of the safety t is a coarse acme thread used to facilitate easy pack-off and re-engagement. A knurled release ring between the box and pin sections maintain torsion integrity until back-off procedure is initiated. An O-ring seal contains pressure while the safety t is made up.

To assemble, install the safety t in the drill string as indicated below. Make up the service connection to a torque of approximately 60 to 75% of the drill string connections. • In drill strings, the safety t should be located above the drill collars to avoid compression. • In fishing strings, the safety t should be located directly above the fishing tool but below

the jar or bumper sub. • In washover strings, the safety t should be located between the drill pipe and the washover pipe. Gotco Washover Safety ts are provided with a tool t box thread and a washover pipe pin thread. To disengage the safety t while down-hole, place pipe in tension and apply left-hand torque. Hold torque while slowly lowering pipe until safety t breaks. Continue to unscrew safety t to the left. To re-engage the safety t, lower pipe until pin section of safety t lands on box section. Apply one point of weight. Rotate to the left one or two turns. Then rotate to the right until torque builds up, indicating safety t is made up.

Junk Mills Gotco junk mills are produced for high strength heat treated alloy. All mills are available as bit type or with optional fishing neck and hard surface wear pads. Large circulation ports and ample fluid channels provide cooling and efficient removal of cuttings. Gotco mills are available dressed with super tough Gotcoloy (crushed, sintered tungsten carbide.) Concave Junk Mill

The Gotco Skirted Mill is a three piece assembly used to mill junk or tubular inside casing. The assembly consists of a top sub, skirt, and flat bottom junk mill. An optional bladed type junk mill is also available. The mill and skirt are both made up to the lower end of the top sub. The skirt surrounds the mill and extends suitably beyond the mill face to act as a guide and centralizes the junk to be milled. The skirt has hard metal ribs to increase wear resistance but does not contain any carbide which could damage the casing. Pilot Mills Gotco Pilot Mills are commonly used to mill casing, liners, washover pipe, drill pipe, and tubing. The pilot mill is available in a standard configuration or can be designed to customer specifications. For extra long mill runs, the blade length may be increased to almost any desired length. For those who wish to dress their own mills, these mills are available without dressing at a considerable savings to the customer.

Taper Mills The Gotco Taper Mill is used to establish gage diameter. It is used primarily to mill collapsed casing. It may also be used in conjunction with other mills to prepare a fish for internal engagement. Another useful application is deburring the window after a whipstock operation is completed. Tapered mills come in three common configurations. The 60 degree mill has an included taper of 60 degrees (30 degrees per side.) Boot Basket (Junk Sub) –

Boot Basket (Junk Sub) The Gotco Boot Basket (Junk Sub) is an accessory tool used in milling or drilling operations. It is designed to prevent cuttings that are too heavy to be circulated from settling to the bottom of the hole.

Construction Boot baskets are manufactured from high-strength heat treated alloy steel to withstand wear. Heavy-duty ribs are attached to the cup to prevent it from being crushed and to guide the tool through tight places while tripping out of the hole. These ribs are not welded to the main body of the tool, further enhancing its strength.

Assembly and Operation Boot baskets are used directly above the mill or drill bit. On severe milling jobs, it is customary to run two or three baskets in tandem above the mill. This tandem running not only increases the capacity to remove the cuttings, but also provides extra stabilization for the mill. Boot baskets can be run in either open hole or inside casing. When the basket is working inside a casing, hardfaced pads, dressed to the same O.D. as the mill or bit, should be used.

Lift Plugs

The Gotco Washover Safety t is manufactured to provide safe and easy release and make-up whenever disengagement from the washover string becomes necessary. This dependable, fieldtough tool is designed to transmit torque in either direction when placed in the washover string. Construction – The Gotco Washover Safety t consists of a pin section, a box section, and a friction ring. The internal connection of the safety t is a coarse acme thread used to facilitate easy pack-off and re-engagement. A knurled release ring between the box and pin sections maintains torsion integrity until backoff procedure is initiated. An Oring seal contains pressure while the safety t is made up. Assembly – To assemble, install the safety t in the drill string and make up the service connection to a torque of approximately 60 to 75% of the string connections. In washover strings, the safety t should be located between the drill pipe and the washover pipe. Gotco Washover Safety ts are provided with a tool t box thread up and a washover pipe pin thread down. To disengage the safety t while down-hole, place pipe in tension and apply left-hand torque. Hold torque while slowly lowering pipe until safety t breaks. Continue to unscrew safety t to the left. To re-engage the safety t, lower pipe until pin section of safety t lands on box section. Apply one point of weight. Rotate to the left one or two turns. Then rotate to the right until torque builds up, indicating safety t is made up.

Gotco Lift Plugs are designed to provide an economical method of handling washover strings. They are available in all thread types and sizes, have sufficient shoulder diameter to handling the washover string, and can be ordered with or without lifting bail. Elevator Lift Subs – Gotco Elevator Lift Subs are used to handle the washover string and have an upper shoulder as well as reduced neck for securing in the elevator.

Gotco Drive Subs provide the crossover connection between the drill pipe string and the washover string. Each is machined from high-grade alloy steel and heat treated to provide maximum strength and durability. Construction – Drive subs are provided with a box connection up, cut to customer specifications, for make-up with the fishing string. A pin connection down is also cut to customer specification and will match the washover string connections. A fishing neck is provided for ease of handling. A long type drive sub with extra long fishing neck is also available.

Gotco Rotary Shoes are manufactured from specially heat treated alloy to provide the ultimate in toughness and durability. They are used to cut a clearance between the fish and the wall of the well bore. Each shoe is designed to fit a particular downhole need and is run on the bottom of the washover string. Shoe design is dictated by whether it cuts on the bottom, on the O.D., on the I.D., or on any combination of these. When hole size permits, additional clearances can be cut by using side ribs to enable greater circulation.

Two basic types are available. The tooth-type shoe (Type A) is utilized when the bulk of the work entails removing formation to free a drill string. The toothtype shoe is also used to washover stuck drill collars, drill pipe, and tubing whenever the fish does not require milling. The burning-type shoe (Type B), dressed with Gotcoloy sintered tungsten carbide, cuts blades from stabilizers, mills subs to a smaller diameter for overshot catch, mills out a collapsed section of pipe, mills cutters off of roller-type reamers, and breaks up junk lodged in the bottom of the hole.

Rotary Shoes

Type A rotary shoe is a drag type shoe used to cut soft formations and only cuts on the bottom. Type B rotary shoe is used inside casings to washover on a fish without damaging the casing. Remedial and Repair – Casing Patch, Lead-Seal Type

Casing Patch, Lead-Seal Type The damaged portion of casing must be cut and removed from the hole. It is important to properly cut and dress the top of the down-hole casing for effective engagement and pack-off. The top of the string remaining down-hole must be prepared for engagement. Preparation can include rolling the casing with a Gotco Casing Roller to assure roundness and proper diameter.

Construction The casing patch consists of a bowl, guide, grapple carrier, grapple, grapple control, and seal assembly. Load bearing components are high strength heat treated alloy steel to ensure string integrity is maintained. A box connection on the upper end of the casing patch will be cut to customer specifications. The seal assembly is composed of two sleeves manufactured from pure, unalloyed, fully annealed lead.

These lead sleeves will provide the seal in the patch which s the two casing strings. Seal rings aid in setting the lead seals into the correct position.

Assembly and Operation Make up the casing patch to the bottom of the new casing string. Be sure to use tongs only on the upper end of the bowl, near the top connection. Lower the tool into the hole. When the fish is reached, slowly lower the cas-

ing patch while rotating slowly to the right. Continue until the fish has ed through the guide and bottomed out in the grapple carrier. Stop rotation. Slowly pick up the string to remove any weight or residual torque. Caution: Backlash could cause the patch to disengage. The lead seal is set by raising the string. After the casing patch has been set into position, it becomes a permanent part of the casing string. The casing patch may be removed if necessary by bumping down to release the grip of the grapple. Slowly raise the string while rotating to the right. Continue until the patch has cleared the casing. Lift from the hole.

Remedial and Repair

Manufactured from specially selected alloys, designed specifically to resist wear, the casing roller can be used to restore any size and weight of casing. The casing roller consists of a mandrel with a box connection up and three heavy duty rollers. The I.D. of each roller is precision ground to assure proper rotation on the mandrel. Securing the rollers to the mandrel is a nose cone which is retained by large ball bearings. A through bore provides circulation capabilities. Tools may be run effectively at relatively slow rotary speeds and are available with lefthand connections if desired.

Operation The casing roller should be made up to the bottom of the drill string. Lower the pipe and rotate slowly until the damaged section is reached. Start circulation, increase rotation speed and continue to lower slowly. The tapered nose cone will enter and guide the tool, allowing it to open the collapsed portion to its original size. Use of too little pressure will wear the tool without restoring the casing. Be sure adequate downward pressure is maintained. Add drill collars if the string weight is insufficient to assure continued downward progress.

Casing Scraper The Gotco Casing Scraper is designed to remove scale, mud cake, cement sheath, embedded bullets, and other foreign material from the inside of the casing wall. Maintaining a clean casing I.D. is vital to the efficient operation of down-hole tools used in drilling the well. The resulting smooth surface properly prepares the casing for subsequent down-hole operations such as packer setting and squeeze tools. Construction Manufactured from alloy steel and heat treated to provide strength and durability, each scraper must rigid nondestructive testing to ensure the highest quality product. Each tool has six blades specially aligned on the body to provide the maximum cutting surface area for vertical and rotational scraping. The blades are designed to give optimum shearing action with the least amount of restriction to returning well fluid. The splined body provides absolute safety and security by locking each blade onto an integral part of the scraper. This unique body design also allows for ease of maintenance and dressing of the tool. All casing scrapers can be easily set for positive or spring loaded scraping action. Even when set positive to drift, the spring loaded design will effectively scrape multi-weighted casing within the well. All blades are cast steel and heat treated to provide long lasting service life.

Brake Rims & Bands

Master Oilfield, a division of Gotco International, Inc., is a leading manufacturer in O.E.M. and after market-brake rims and brake bands. Our print files are continuously updated and expanded to offer the latest in technological advances. Brake rims and brake bands are manufactured to meet and exceed O.E.M. specifications. Material certification will be supplied upon request. Hard Surface Brake Rims All brake rims are fabricated from mild steel and hard surfaced by a submerged arc overlay process using special alloy wire. Hard overlay braking service is precision ground to a tolerance of less than .010” total run out over circumference of rim. Quality Brake Bands All brake bands are fabricated from certifiable and traceable high strength alloy steel. Bolt hole patterns are to be drilled on flat surface prior to rolling as per API standards or to measurement per O.E.M. specifications that pertain to drawwork type.
