Distribution Date: 23/March/2010 Submission Date: 28/May/2010 Introduction The aim of this assignment is to introduce learners to the location of tourist destinations, the cultural, Social and physical features of those destinations, the issues and trends that affect their popularity. Destinations have made tourism an important sector in many countries as a growing source of foreign exchange earnings. In addition to the generation of foreign exchange earnings tourism also alleviates the balance of payments , creates employment and contributes significantly towards the increase of income, savings, investment and economic growth (Lim 1997) Destinations exist at a number of different geographical levels which are interrelated. Within the European context, some tourists see the whole continent as a single destination, for example “Inter Railers’ who tour Europe on a rail ticket that allows them to travel in most European countries. Others see the whole country such as UK, a successful tourism destination worth over £85 billion a year to British Economy. A city such as Prague or a region such as Yorkshire can also be seen as a destination. Specification of Assessment In this assignment you are required to produce a report on a Tourism Destination of your choice (choose from your designated groups 1 – 4). Your choice of destination could be a country, a city, a town, a region or an area that is dependent to a significant extent on the revenues from tourism. Within this assignment, address all the learning outcomes 1 to 4; and criteria (p1 to p9). You need to show evidence of a clear integrated and logical argument. Relevant research data and theory are required to and justify discussion and critical analysis. The assignment must have a high standard of presentation, be coherent and cohesive, and show accuracy in English expression, spelling, and referencing.
