Sir Peter Paul Rubens Lion
Description What can you learn from the title of the artwork? A-It is called lion because there is a picture of a lion.
Description What subjects in the artwork can you recognize? A-A lion with human features and rocks.
Description Looking at the elements of design, describe what qualities you see. A-Contrast, emphasis, value, texture.
Description What media and techniques did the artist use? A-shading, black and yellow chalk, and drawing stenciles.
Analysis Emphasis: Is there a dominant element or focal point that you see first? A-the focal point is the lions face because it stands out over the picture.
Analysis Balance: Is there a special balance, or “weight,” among the elements? What mood does it create? A-the left side is more shaded, they used black chalk to balance the white and orange.
Analysis Proportion: Do the proportions look normal, ideal, or unusual? Why? A-they made it look more muscular than a regular lions body.
Analysis Pattern: Are elements repeated to create a pattern? Where? Why? A-no pattern, just an object.
Analysis Rhythm or Movement: What visual rhythms or paths of movement do your eyes follow? Where? Why? A-my eyes follow the hair.
