Packet Tracer 5.0 - Configuring the ...
olabisi0901 2 posts since Jul 22, 2008 Hi, I'm new at using Packet tracer. I'm using version 5 and i find it difficult to configure the cloud for frame relay especially the port to lmi/dlci mappings, having more than two routers on the network. can anybody please explain how to do the configuration. how does it apply to the point-to-point/multipoint sub-interfaces configured on the routers Thank you all.

Each DLCI would be a separate subinterface. I.E. Serial0/0/0.101 Serial0/0/0.102 Of course you can call the subinterfaces anything you want just put in 101 and 102 as an example. Go over the frame-relay portion of the CCNA book for more info

Click on the cloud, then click CONFIG, you will see a list of all the interfaces present, under the heading INTERFACES on the left hand side. When you click on any of the interface, you will see the textboxes to configure lmi, dlci etc. on right side. Where exactly are you facing the problem ? Can you attach your packet tracer file ? If that is not possible, can you attach the picture of your desired network ? You can take a screenshot of the network in packet tracer also and attach here as a file.

This is not the right way. Instead you should create subinterfaces first, and then do the mapping. Map One subinterface per DLCI. And also don't forget to set the encapsulation of the router's interface to frame-relay. By default encapsulation is HDLC. There are many things that you can't set using the GUI. So you have to use CLI on routers. There is no alternative. I am attaching the exact coding and all the required commands. I Hope this will solve your problem. Let me know the progres.

It can be designed without them although this is MUCH less popular. Sorry that I have not responded to your message yet. I just read it recently but have been busy! Andrew, Unfortunately, Packet Tracer is currently only offered to Cisco Network Academy students. I would start over as you probably made a mistake. You will only gain by committing to memory by retyping everything.. There is no information in it about how to config FR cloud. Because Olabisi has already done that part in the original question. Anyways, Here is what I know about the FR cloud. In addition to configuring DLCIs on Routers, it is also necessary that FR switches from the service provider are also configured with those DLCI values. But in our case we have access to FR cloud as a whole ( and not any particular FR Switch).

, i will post my configuration asap. Just to let you know what I am doing in words, I am using Packet Tracer 5 and your configuration you tried on real routers. I have seen a FR network design on Packet Tracer it is working fine. On comparison the difference is serial cable, according to my understanding our routers are DTEs and What is inside the cloud ( switches) are DCE. so I have connected cable between FR cloud and routers in a such a way that my routers are DTE and I do not need to put Clock rate 64000 command on my routers because as i said they are DTEs, do you get me ? so R1 (DTE end)------------------Cloud (DCE end) if this is not the case please explain why? Because the configuration which i mentioned ( http://www.solostuff.net/ ) is working fine, I will post my configuration during this weekend Many thanks

If you are still unsuccessful, after trying above things, the only thing you should be missing is Inport Port To Output Port Mapping on Frame Relay Cloud. What about mulipoint , and with routing protocol ( instead of static routing) . Also can we use any other LMI type ? I will try to explain them in points ( as per my understanding ) 1. You were getting the results of show frame-relay map, show frame-relay pvc, show frame-relay lmi because these commands have nothing to do with InputPort to OutputPort mapping ( which is an internal matter of frame-relay cloud ). that DLCI is not significant beyond a particular link. And map and pvc commands shows information about dlci. And lmi command shows information about the connection between DTE and FR-Switch which again is not related to InputPort to OutputPort Mapping. But one thing is for sure, that if u haven't configured these PortMappings ( I/P to O/P), network is not going to work. 2. Use of multipoint sub-interfaces is similar to point-to-point sub-interfaces. But you have to mention keyword "multipoint" while creating sub-interface. And then associate all of the dlci with different frame-relay interface-dlci commands. Here is the sample DTE(config)#interface s0/0/0 DTE(config-if)#encapsulation frame-relay DTE(config-if)#no shut DTE(config-if)#exit DTE(config)#interface s0/0/0.23 multipoint DTE(config-subif)#ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 DTE(config-subif)#frame-relay interface-dlci 102 DTE(config-subif)#frame-relay interface-dlci 103 and so on... Similarty configure multipoint subinterfaces on Other Routers 3. If you are using sub-interfaces ( point-to-point or multipoint ), then use of routing protocols is very simple. We can use all the three lmi-types in Packet tracer 5.0 viz. Cisco, Q933a and Ansi. 5. As far as your last question is concerned, after reading many many reviews of qualified CCNAs, I am getting a feeling that whatever is given in Todd Lammle and Cisco Press Books ( ICND1 and ICND2) will be more than enough for the CCNA exam. I have one question; using Packet Tracer when my all router can ping each other but when I change type of lmi change at either router or on switch in cloud it does not ping which does make sense.However, if I disable lmi on router by typing "no keepalve" Router should not ping because lmi has been disabled on DTE router, Why does it continue to ping ? 2. They signal whether a PVC is active or inactive. An access link might be up, but one or more VCs could be down. DTE needs to know which VCs are up and which are down. It learns that information from the switch using LMI status messages. If you disable keepalive using "no keepalive" interface configuration command, then you won't get above information automatically. So if the PVCs are working properly, it won't disturb the DTE. But if PVCs are facing a problem, you won't be able to communicate. But the main problem is you won't come to know easily where is the problem whether PVC is active, inactive or deleted.. LMI provide this useful information automatically to you. And also that LMI doesn't work end to end i.e. DTE to DTE. It works only between DTE and FR Switch. It is somewhat similar to how Dynamic Routing Protocols work. If you have configured static routes to a destination, then that route would always be available in the routing table even if the destination network is removed later on. ( I am not talking about the local exit interface going down, in which case static route might be removed from the table) But if you configured OSPF or EIGRP or RIP etc, then they can automatically add/remove the routes in the routing table depending upon the timers and updates received. Thus they provide useful information automatically. Does it provide any help ??

, i will post my configuration asap. Just to let you know what I am doing in words, I am using Packet Tracer 5 and your configuration you tried on real routers. I have seen a FR network design on Packet Tracer it is working fine. On comparison the difference is serial cable, according to my understanding our routers are DTEs and What is inside the cloud ( switches) are DCE. so I have connected cable between FR cloud and routers in a such a way that my routers are DTE and I do not need to put Clock rate 64000 command on my routers because as i said they are DTEs, do you get me ? so R1 (DTE end)------------------Cloud (DCE end) if this is not the case please explain why? Because the configuration which i mentioned ( http://www.solostuff.net/ ) is working fine, I will post my configuration during this weekend Many thanks

If you are still unsuccessful, after trying above things, the only thing you should be missing is Inport Port To Output Port Mapping on Frame Relay Cloud. What about mulipoint , and with routing protocol ( instead of static routing) . Also can we use any other LMI type ? I will try to explain them in points ( as per my understanding ) 1. You were getting the results of show frame-relay map, show frame-relay pvc, show frame-relay lmi because these commands have nothing to do with InputPort to OutputPort mapping ( which is an internal matter of frame-relay cloud ). that DLCI is not significant beyond a particular link. And map and pvc commands shows information about dlci. And lmi command shows information about the connection between DTE and FR-Switch which again is not related to InputPort to OutputPort Mapping. But one thing is for sure, that if u haven't configured these PortMappings ( I/P to O/P), network is not going to work. 2. Use of multipoint sub-interfaces is similar to point-to-point sub-interfaces. But you have to mention keyword "multipoint" while creating sub-interface. And then associate all of the dlci with different frame-relay interface-dlci commands. Here is the sample DTE(config)#interface s0/0/0 DTE(config-if)#encapsulation frame-relay DTE(config-if)#no shut DTE(config-if)#exit DTE(config)#interface s0/0/0.23 multipoint DTE(config-subif)#ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 DTE(config-subif)#frame-relay interface-dlci 102 DTE(config-subif)#frame-relay interface-dlci 103 and so on... Similarty configure multipoint subinterfaces on Other Routers 3. If you are using sub-interfaces ( point-to-point or multipoint ), then use of routing protocols is very simple. As far as your last question is concerned, after reading many many reviews of qualified CCNAs, I am getting a feeling that whatever is given in Todd Lammle and Cisco Press Books ( ICND1 and ICND2) will be more than enough for the CCNA exam. I have one question; using Packet Tracer when my all router can ping each other but when I change type of lmi change at either router or on switch in cloud it does not ping which does make sense.However, if I disable lmi on router by typing "no keepalve" Router should not ping because lmi has been disabled on DTE router, Why does it continue to ping ? 2. They signal whether a PVC is active or inactive. An access link might be up, but one or more VCs could be down. DTE needs to know which VCs are up and which are down. It learns that information from the switch using LMI status messages. If you disable keepalive using "no keepalive" interface configuration command, then you won't get above information automatically. So if the PVCs are working properly, it won't disturb the DTE. But if PVCs are facing a problem, you won't be able to communicate. But the main problem is you won't come to know easily where is the problem whether PVC is active, inactive or deleted.. LMI provide this useful information automatically to you. And also that LMI doesn't work end to end i.e. DTE to DTE. It works only between DTE and FR Switch. It is somewhat similar to how Dynamic Routing Protocols work. If you have configured static routes to a destination, then that route would always be available in the routing table even if the destination network is removed later on. ( I am not talking about the local exit interface going down, in which case static route might be removed from the table) But if you configured OSPF or EIGRP or RIP etc, then they can automatically add/remove the routes in the routing table depending upon the timers and updates received. Thus they provide useful information automatically. Does it provide any help ??
