Introduction This is a general guide for Lord of the Rings Online. Now, you might have asked: “How can a GENERAL guide have SO MANY PAGES?!” The answer to this question is quite eleven really. (Reader: “Hey, I think you made a typo! There; that italic, bold word… Why would you italicise and embolden the typo? And why do I know these queer words?!!”) LOTRO has reached its 11th year! This means the game has constantly received updates for 11 years! Unfortunately, LOTRO is not eleventy-one years old, as we all would wish. LOTRO has 11 years’ worth of content; and, because of this, a general guide about 11 years of content can become quite extensive. Yes, 11. I typed 11 quite a lot in this paragraph. 11 is an extremely persistent number! After 11 years, this guide came into existence. As a matter of a fact, this paragraph has 11 sentences and eleven 11s! You are counting the 11s now, aren’t you? I bet you think I typed this last sentence to conform to my own claim, but you would be wrong. In order to stop this guide from becoming a trilogy on playing LOTRO, I will attempt to keep the information short and sweet, while giving links to more detailed information on the topics. (For those time travellers beyond the year 2018, I apologize for any and all links that stopped working. Please Google your question. I found that Google will accurately link the guides you need. Google knows its mathematics.) You can click on the ‘Back to Contents’ button on the bottom of each page in order to go back to the table of content on page 1. The table of content is the titles on page 1. These titles will take you to the page and heading you want, if you click on them. Use this to save time and only read what you want! If you wish to me for some reason, you may send an in-game mail to Nulloros on Evernight (EU) server. Please, only one message per person; I actually play that character and do not want a full inbox. If you wish to know why I would spend my time on a guide: It’s to help people of course. (Although, I doubt many people would wonder such a silly thing.) I do not have enough hope tokens to survive the dread of giving out my email-address, so I apologize for the inconvenience. Basic game vocabulary 15G/15g: Gold (In this case, 15 gold) Adds: enemies that attack you after you've begun a fight with another enemy. (Usually spawn after starting a fight with the boss) AFAIK: as far as I know AFK: Away From Keyboard. Aggro: (aggravation) can be used as a verb, meaning alerting an enemy so it will start to attack you, or it can be used as a noun, meaning the threat that you are to an enemy in a fight. Basically, if you make enemy angry, enemy kill you! Alts/toons: other characters on the same . AoE attacks: area of effect, attacks that damage multiple foes within a certain range. (Swing Greatsword-Slash-Attack-Of-Death, 3 enemies die) Cod: Cash on Deliver. (Paying for items in mailbox. Requires or higher) Creeps: monster players (Bad guy players) Crit: critical hit / critical success. (All attacks have a small chance to crit. Critical hit = More damage) DoT: damage over time, this will inflict a certain amount of damage every x seconds. (Such as bleeding, or poison effects) DPS: damage per second, this can indicate the player that deals most of the damage in a fellowship, or it can indicate the DPS-value of a weapon. (Also the amount of DPS the player can do Freeps: stands for free peoples, meaning the normal characters in Middle-Earth (dwarf - elf - hobbit – human –beorn –high elf) These are the ‘good guy’ players. Gold Sellers: People who attempt to sell in-game items or gold for real life money. This is illegal. If you buy from them, you can get banned from playing LOTRO! If you see a gold seller (they are quite obvious, obnoxious and persistent), right click his name (in the chat box), and click ‘chat’>’Report Harassment’. HoT: heal over time, heals the target for a certain amount of morale (or power if cast by a LoreMaster) over time. ICMR: in-combat morale regeneration

Page 5 of 22 IR: in-combat power regeneration IIRC: if I correctly IMO: in my opinion Level Cap: The highest level attainable in-game. (Level 115 at the time of writing) LI: Legendary Item (Level 45+ special weapon/equipment) Loot: Items you pick up by killing mobs or opening treasure chests. LP/TP: Lotro Points (Points used in the in-game store. This was previously called TP – Turbine Points) Mob: creature that you can attack. (Normally a mob of creatures attacking you) NPC: non player character (Not played by a person) PUG: Pick Up Group. (See more on this at Raids) PvMP: Player vs Monster-Player. (I do not play PvMP, so it will not be covered in this guide) Root: a skill that causes the target to become unable to move for a short amount of time. Attacking is still possible though. Solo: to solo/having soloed something means you did it alone. Usually refers to one person finishing group content alone. This can be quite challenging. Tank: The person who takes most of the damage in a fellowship to protect players with lower defence. TL; DR/tl; dr: too long; didn’t read Wipe: Refers to the whole fellowship or raid dying. Can be used to say the whole group died: “We wiped 10 times before killing the sickle-fly” or to ask the whole group to die: “Please wipe guys, we failed the do-not-lose-the-one-ring challenge” WTB: want to buy WTS: want to sell XP: Experience
Nicknames for each class:
Beorning: bear/beorn Burglar: burg Captain: cappy/cap Champion: champ/chimp/chump/chomp Guardian: guard/tank (The guard would only be called tank if it is the only tank in the group. This goes for any other class within a certain role.) Hunter: Hunt/taxi/Huntard (Extremely rude, use with caution!) Lore-Master: LM/Lag-Master Minstrel: mini Rune-keeper: RK/rune Warden: warden/ward/deus inter homines Please note that the nicknames in red are just jokes used in-game for some classes.

Enemy colour, level and difficulty In every zone, you will encounter a lot of creatures. Some are friendly, you can recognize them by their green or yellow morale bar, but most are hostile. Creatures with a yellow morale bar will not attack you until you attack them, creatures with an orange-reddish morale bar will attack you when you come too close (either immediately or after threatening). Creatures that have the ability to engage in combat (when you see numbers in morale and power bars) have names that can come in 9 different colours:
Grey: out-levelled, 9 or more levels below yours Green: very easy, 6-8 levels below yours Light blue: easy, 3-5 levels below yours Blue: regular, 1-2 levels below yours White: regular, equal level or 1 level difference Yellow: regular, 1-2 levels above yours Orange: hard, 3-5 levels above yours Red: very hard: 5-7 levels above yours Purple: 8 or more levels above yours, don’t try this because you won’t stand a chance! Your miss chance will be increased dramatically so you will barely damage the enemy and he will kill you in no time! Run, or sacrifice your life, so your fellowship can survive!
The colour of the ring around an NPC’s head shows you his/her rank. Higher ranked enemies deal more damage and have better defences & morale. In climbing order:
Green: Swarm Blue: Neutral Orange: Signature Orange mixed with green: Rare Signature Orange + Eye of Sauron = Elite Orange mixed with green + Eye of Sauron = Rare Elite Orange + Eye of Sauron + 4 spikes = Elite Master Orange mixed with green + Eye of Sauron + 4 spikes = Rare Elite Master Orange + Eye of Sauron + 6 spikes = Nemesis Orange + Flaming Eye of Sauron = Arch Nemesis

Fellowships, Instances, Skirmishes, Epic Battles and Raids Fellowship: A fellowship is a group of 1-6 players playing together.
You can right-click a character’s portrait (picture) or name, and click invite to fellowship, in order to form a fellowship. A fellowship cannot hold more than 6 players. (See raids in order to play with more) To talk with your fellowship, create a new chat tab (or use existing) and change the filters, so ‘Fellowship’ is checked. Type /f message in order to talk with your fellowship, in your chosen chat tab. Change message, with your message. All players within a fellowship gain experience from a kill (provided that they are at maximum 119m away from killed mob). Each player gets the same amount he would when killing the mob alone. When 120m or more away from the killed mob, you will not get any reward! Loot basically works the same as experience, each player gets his ‘random’ loot from the mobs. Loot items that are within chests work differently though. (They follow loot rules, see below) If you wish to understand loot rules and loot quality, visit this link: http://www.guildsanctuary.com/forum/index.php?topic=437.0 (The information is old, but still seems to still be relevant at this point in time.) I recommend most players to always use round-robin with need/greed/ or roll/. Free for all and master looter are very situational and should not normally be used. You can leave loot quality at uncommon. The only downside to playing in a fellowship is that LOTRO becomes easier. (So, get yourself a fellowship, and begin the ‘easy’ *author manically laughs* journey to Mordor!)
Instances: To quote the wiki: “Instances are sections of the game separated out of the main world
for quests or story-telling as public dungeons, private fellowship, solo dungeons, skirmishes or massive raids.” You unlock them at level 20, and you can do them from anywhere. Physically being at the instance entrance is not required. Just press Ctrl + J and choose your instance. (Some instances require you to visit the instance location once to unlock it)
Instances can be done solo, with a fellowship, or with a raid. Each instance has his own player size. (From 1 player to 24) If you play an instance with less that the player size, it will be more difficult. Raids, skirmishes and Epic Battles are found in the same tab as instances. See information on them below.
Skirmishes: Skirmishes are special instances where you can summon a ‘skirmish recruit’ NPC to help you fight. You unlock skirmishes at level 20, after you complete the quest chain that the skirmish captain gives you. The skirmish captain can be located at any skirmish camp. There is a skirmish camp just outside South Bree Gate. There is another to the right of Thorin’s Hall Entrance, if you look at the entrance from outside.

Epic Battles: To quote the wiki once again: “Epic Battles are a new (quite old…) combat mechanic introduced in November 2013 as part of Helm’s Deep. While they are special instanced battles, unlike skirmishes or raids, which focus on small scale tactical combat, Epic Battles are more concerned with strategic combat across the whole battlefield. They introduce a number of new (old) game mechanics, including siege weapons, leading Rohirrim soldiers and death streaks, the efficiency of which is improved by acquiring and spending trait points in the three new roles.” Epic Battles require the Helm’s Deep expansion, but some of the battles are available for all players. I will not be giving much information on epic battles; as they cause lag, are tedious, obsolete and are one of my least favourite parts of LOTRO. Raids: Raids are found in the same place as instances, and work the same way, with a few exceptions:
A raid is done with 12-24 players (Although some exceptional players have soloed raids. Soloing raids is not how they were intended to be played, and is not worth the time. It’s a fun challenge though.) Level cap raids are the ‘in-thing’. This is level cap player’s endgame. (The game is far from over at that point though. The word endgame would be better understood as endlevel.) Some updates might change endgame raiding into flower picking, for a brief time, before introducing the new raid. This is normal, developers make mistakes.
How to form a raid:
You can right-click a character’s portrait (picture) or name, and click invite to fellowship, in order to form a fellowship. A fellowship cannot hold more than 6 players. (To talk with your fellowship, create a new chat tab (or use existing) and change the filters, so ‘Fellowship’ is checked. After you have your fellowship, Right-Click your character portrait, click Fellowship>Convert to raid (Only the leader of the fellowship can do this. The person who forms the fellowship is the leader) Type /ra message in order to talk with your raid, in your chosen chat tab. Change message, with your message. to have the raid filter checked, in order to see messages sent to the raid.
Raids and instances have difficulty tiers:
Tier 1 is Easy Tier 2 is Medium (or Hard, if there are only 2 tiers) Tier 3 is Hard
Higher tiers have increased difficulty. Higher tiers have better rewards and more enemies. (More enemies also means more xp)

Raid challenges: Some raids have challenges: (Some challenges require a higher tier)
A raid challenge is a special quest within the raid. Completing this quest gives better rewards. This quest increases difficulty, and can EASILY fail. This is why some raiders get so serious. They have to, if they wish to succeed. This is NOT AN EXCUSE FOR RUDENESS. Be Serious, Be Polite. T2C means Tier 2 challenge, and usually refers to the current newest raid at level cap, on tier 2, with the intent of completing the challenge mode.
Raids require lots of teamwork, and good diversity in classes. There are many guides as to what configuration is optimal. Although, if all the players are skilled, they can run with a non-optimal group configuration, and win. Please do not quote me on that if you try it and fail. Both tier 1 and tier 2 raids have required/recommended statistic caps (meaning the number is the highest it can go) I will NOT cover this. Please find a more specific guide. You can also use Titan-Bar plugin to check if you reached cap. If you wish to do some serious, difficult stuff, such as T2C raids:
a good kin (There are many, posting their adverts in world chat. No, not the goldseller advert, the other one.)
Avoid PUGs when or if possible. A PUG is a Pick Up Group (Playing with people outside kin and friends list, strangers) o
PUGs quite often have a non-optimal group setup, with unskilled, or poorly geared players. This makes T2 and T2C practically impossible; and T1 unnecessarily difficult. Players who use Valar Packages (Store, Instant level boosts) and start playing PUGs, without knowing their own skills, spoil the experience.
o
Some people who lead PUG groups know how to choose their groups, and can do the content as well as any organized kin can.
o
You will often see these leaders telling you ‘sorry, you need better gear’, or ‘sorry, we already have 4 hunters’. Do not despair (Use those hope tokens!)
Ask someone for advice on armouring yourself, and getting raid-ready. The leader is just saying that he expects that you can improve that sturdy dwarf!
I will NOT go into more detail on raiding requirements, optimal class, optimal race, rotation, etc. This changes with each update. Please ask players in-game or search for a guide online.
Raiding, and getting raid-ready is not as difficult as it sounds, but it is a time-consuming process.

Chat Shortcuts
Fellowship: /f o Used to chat with your fellowship. Kinship: /k o Used to chat with your kin. Looking for Fellowship: /lff o A global channel where players look for other players play with. o This channel is used for everything from low level instances, to level-cap raids. o Do not use this channel for anything else! Raid: /ra o Used to chat with your raid. Trade: /trade o Players use the trade channel to look for buyers or sellers for their chosen good. o You may post here if you want to buy or sell something. o Do not use this channel for anything else! World-chat: /wd o Used to ask advice, or chat about anything. Do not talk about politics or religion. o This channel is often spammed by gold-sellers. Report harassment with these gold sellers, they will be instantly put on ignore as well. o You can find kin recruitment messages here. Just send the kin leader an IMS if you wish to .

Useful Commands and tips Commands
Move UI: o Ctrl + \ o UI = Stuff on your screen. Save UI settings: o /ui layout save Load UI settings: o /ui layout load Rename pet: o /et rename name o Replace 'Name' with pet name o (Right-Click a class pet/mount portrait to rename it.) How to make a /follow skill: o Type this: /shortcut <shortcut location>
o It will look something like this: o /shortcut 11 /follow As you can see, <shortcut location> has been replaced with 11, and
has been replaced with /follow. This means the skill /follow will be placed on quick slot 11. o Make sure slot 11 on your skill bar is empty. o Now you have a follow skill on your skill bar. o This skill can be moved. If you are stuck o /stuck To Undelete an item o /reclaim o (Only works with special items, such as the year 1 gift-box)
Tips
Use Full-Screen (Windowed) Mode: o If you ALT-TAB a lot, use Full-Screen (Windowed) Screen Mode, in Graphics Settings, under Display. This practically nullifies ALT-TAB lag! Disable camera following your target: o Press X To use stacks of an item simultaneously: o Press Alt + Right-Click on the items. o This saves a lot of time when using reputation items! Enable auto-loot o Show/Hide Names: o Press N Emotes/Pets/Mounts location o Press the horse icon on mini-map to open a window with all your emotes/pets/mounts listed. (You can add them as skills on the skill-bar.) Symbols of the Elder King: o Buy Symbols of the Elder King (

Making some extra gold: (New players) o Open up crafting recipes before selling for extra gold! o If you pick up a Sturdy Steel Key, sell it on auction. (Check the sell price at the auction house, or ask someone) o If there is a festival ongoing, see if one of the vendors will exchange tokens for essence reclamation scrolls. These scrolls sell for can be sold for a lot of gold. (Once again, ask someone for the sell price.) This works for any in-demand cap-level item available during festivals. o At level 20, go to the South Barrow-Downs in Bree-Land. Look for the cave called Haudh Iarchith (35.1 S, 55.1 W). Kill all mobs in here (I recommend you bring friends) The mobs normally spawn faster than they can get killed. This is good for both experience, and farming gold. Sell the reputation items you find on the auction house. All the trash loot you pick up will also net you a few gold. (Yes, GOLD, you poor hobbit.) Some useful combat options (In ‘Options’, under ‘Combat Options’): o To automatically target enemies: (No TAB-pressing) o Go to options, search “auto target” o At ‘Combat Options’, tick Auto Target Enemies o NOT recommended for ranged classes, such as hunter and rune-keeper. (You will, quite often, target the wrong enemy. And bring a whole mob of monsters unto your hapless fellowship! Be a good boy/girl and press TAB) o Show Assist Window: This window shows someone in your raid that is assigned raid assist target. Whatever he targets will show up in this window. This is helpful for everyone attacking one target. Or in some cases all healers healing one target. Suggested to use ‘Enable skill target forwarding’ in combat options, with the assist window. This allows you to click on the assist target (an ally), and any skill you use will be used on your target’s target. (Your ally’s target.) RICH GUYS: (No, my poor hobbit, 800G will not do…) o Buy 'Gift of the Valar' (1-50) at level 49. (or level 6) o Buy 'Blessing of the Valar Upgrade' (50-95) at level 94. (or level 50) o Buy 'Aria of the Valar Upgrade' (95-105) at level 104. (or level 95) o Repeat this process for any future level cap increases. o This is done for the bonus virtues. o This saves a lot of time with getting your needed virtues!

Plugins Manage and plugins from one place: Lotro-Plugin-Compendium http://www.lotrointerface.com/s/info663-LOTROPluginCompendium.html A plugin is an UNOFFICIAL but LEGAL alterations of LOTRO’s Interface (UI). The developers allow it, and some players (especially raiders) consider a few plugins essential (My must-have plugins). I will not be adding images; this guide is taking up many pages already. Green means I consider the plugin useful to have. Red means I consider the plugin to be essential. Please note that this is all my personal opinion. You can choose to use none of these plugins, or all of them. Recommended Plugins:
BuffBars Shows effects on your character, with duration, and name. This is a lot easier to read than the effects jumping around under your character’s portrait. MUST-HAVE for most players that do raids. This is USEFUL FOR LEVELING PLAYERS TOO! Right-Click the new items on your screen and click options, to customize BuffBars to your liking.
Festival Buddy A plugin with information on all the festivals, from tokens, to vendor items.
Group Manager Group Manager can be used to quickly rebuild a fellowship or raid. It stores a list of all players in your fellowship with buttons to invite green buttons or dismiss red buttons them. Players that are currently in the fellowship are displayed in green text otherwise they are displayed in red text. Very useful plugin to quickly re-invite a fellowship/raid after disbanding. You do this to reset an instance, a.k.a. farming Thorog.
Item Treasury You want to link an item to buy, but you don’t have it in your inventory? This is THE app for you – This app has a list of all items in game. You can link any item, with the amount you want in chat.
Palantir Have you ever died because you forgot to look at your health bar, or did not notice your morale dropping? Is that even a question? This plugin adds a pretty (and movable) health and mana bar, which fades away out of combat. You can move the bars as well.

Viewing your gold, and chosen currencies onscreen,

Seeing if your stats are t1 or t2 capped for the raid! (This mostly concerns level cap players – Level 115 at the time of writing)
I would suggest that you make the background for Titan-Bar transparent.
To do this, Right-Click the bar at the top of your screen and click “Set back color”. (Yes, Americans cannot spell colour, leave them be. Noah Webster tricked them.)
Make sure the “Apply color to all elements” checkbox is checked, and click the button called “Transparent”. All done.
Travel Window Saves your Travel Skills inside a tooltip. This saves a lot of space on your skill-bar and screen; and looks nice. This is a very useful plugin, but you can leave it if you like travel skills on your skill-bar. With this plugin, change the settings; so it will show the icons, and not a worded list: o
To do this, right click the ‘Travel’ Window in an open spot, Click ‘Mode’, then click ‘Icon Grid’.
o
You also need to disable Milestone Skill 2-12 if you have not purchased those.
o
To do this, Right Click, ‘Travel’ window, go to the ‘Select’ (Look top center, right of ‘General’, left of ‘Sort’)
Disable ‘Return Home’ 2-12
Also disable ‘ House’, if you don’t have one.
I suggest you change Opacity sliders to your liking (Makes the icon and travel window more or less transparent) Min transparency is when your mouse is not hovering over it. Max transparency is when your mouse is hovering over it.
These sliders are within the Travel window, Options, General. They look like small bars with weird arrows at the left and right)

All the icons at the top of the screen, are a part of Titan-Bar. Do not mind my unstable internet connection; I had multiple browser tabs open. Notice the new ‘skin’ on the experience bar, skill-slot bar, mini-map and my character portrait. This is all a part of the JRR The White Hand “Short” skin. (Reader: “Hey, why are you so poor? And why are you playing Gambler?! You gambled away all your money again, didn’t you?!! Most of all, why are you still level 21?!!! Types There are three Types available to new players in Lotro today, Free to Play, , and VIP (subscribed). They give different benefits and bonuses. I will just give a quick overview of the types, please read more here: https://lotrowiki.com/index.php/_Types
Free-to-play (F2P)
All new s start as F2P. This type has many restrictions, but is still playable. There are quite a few players who cannot pay, and play LOTRO as F2P. Players can play for free with significant restrictions and remove those restrictions by making a purchase in the in-game Lotro Store with LOTRO Points (LP).
You will automatically be upgraded to player status with your first purchase of something for real world money. has more benefits than F2P, but less than VIP. Your will never go back to F2P after becoming .
VIP
VIP status is one of three types of a new LOTRO player can have today. As a player with a VIP , you have unlimited access to all game content; only expansions must be purchased. VIP is another way of describing a subscriber.

Quest-Pack and Expansion order For those of you wondering in which order to buy/play all the areas in the game, this information should help you a bit. Please note that there are quest-packs with intersecting levels, meaning you could level up all the way to cap without owning all the quest-packs. I personally have found that the expansions are an important part of the game, which should not be skipped. This information is just for levelling. Please note that everything here is my personal opinion, you can buy and play the quest-packs and expansions as you wish. You could even play without any quest-packs or expansions, although this is tedious, and no-one would recommend it. Lone-Lands: 20-35 o Free to all players. o I find myself leaving here at level 30. The 30-35 content is group content. o I recommend you go to Evendim once you reach level 30. The North Downs: 24-32 o An area mostly played by VIP players, as other players just play in the Lone-Lands. o Do not buy North Downs unless you really want to play there. Lone-Lands will give you what you need. Evendim: 30-40 o The first quest-pack to buy. Do not skip this one! o This quest-pack has a lot of quests and will easily get you to level 40. The Trollshaws: 35-40 o If you are going for the bare minimum, skip the Trollshaws. Evendim will get you to level 40. o This is a nice quest-pack to have, if you got tired of the quests in Evendim, and want something new. o Also, Rivendell is here. The Misty Mountains: 40-45 o If you are going for the bare minimum, skip the Misty Mountains. Angmar will level you from 40-50. o Once again, this is a nice quest-pack to have, but not recommended if you are low on LP. o You need to go through the Trollshaws to enter the Misty Mountains. This can be skipped if you talk to Gandalf, in one of the Prancing Pony’s rooms, in Bree. Accept his quest, and he will teleport you to Rivendell (this is the closest point to the Misty Mountains). Cancel the quest, so you can use it to travel there again.

Angmar: 40-50 o The second quest-pack to buy. Do not skip this one! o Scary place. Home of the Witch-King. o Difficult place for inexperienced players. I recommend you take it slowly and make your character stronger before venturing into Angmar. o Angmar has a lot of group content. You can still get to level 50 while avoiding group content, or you can find a fellowship and do it. o Once you get used to it, you can easily get yourself from 40-50. Forochel: 44-50 o A possible alternative to Angmar, although I would not recommend doing so. o You can use Forochel in conjunction with Angmar to get to level 50. The levelling from level 40-50 can be quite slow. (This was end-game at one point in time) Eregion: 48-53 o I normally come to Eregion at level 45 and level myself here, before going to Moria. o I would not recommend inexperienced players to go here before level 48. o Doing quests and fighting mobs above your own level can be quite a difficult task. If you find that you cannot get to level 50 with Angmar, buy Forochel (44-50), or Eregion (4853), depending on how many levels you need, and which area interests you more. Moria: 51-60 o The first expansion to buy. Do not skip this one! o You guys Moria, from the movies and books? o And the Balrog? o Well, introducing Moria! o It is possible to start Moria at level 45 and leave at level 55. (This makes the game quite a bit more difficult) Lothlórien: 60 o What, just level 60 quests? How? What? o Let me say one thing first, Lothlórien is my favourite map in LOTRO. o If you decided to shoot yourself in the foot by starting Moria at level 45, and leaving at level 55, Lothlórien is for you. o If you left Moria, and aren’t level 60 yet, Lothlórien is for you! o Most of the quests are repeatable dailies. Meaning you can level up with quite a bit with level 60-only quests o Lothlórien helps you get ready for Mirkwood. Mirkwood: 60-65 o The second expansion to buy. o You can choose between Mirkwood and Enedwaith if you just wish to level. o There is a boat in Lothlórien that will take you to Mirkwood. Try to swim across at your own risk! o Bring a torch. Enedwaith: 60-65 o An alternative to Mirkwood. o If you are scared of the dark, get Enedwaith instead of Mirkwood. Dunland: 65-75 o The third expansion to buy. Also known as the Rise of Isengard.

Character Portrait Frames You will notice that some players have a different character portrait frame. These are acquired by playing for 1 year+, or some special circumstances (Such as buying VIP once). You need a or higher to use these frames.
This frame is the 1 year frame. (You unlock it after your is 1 year old, during the anniversary event).

Introduction This is a general guide for Lord of the Rings Online. Now, you might have asked: “How can a GENERAL guide have SO MANY PAGES?!” The answer to this question is quite eleven really. (Reader: “Hey, I think you made a typo! There; that italic, bold word… Why would you italicise and embolden the typo? And why do I know these queer words?!!”) LOTRO has reached its 11th year! This means the game has constantly received updates for 11 years! Unfortunately, LOTRO is not eleventy-one years old, as we all would wish. LOTRO has 11 years’ worth of content; and, because of this, a general guide about 11 years of content can become quite extensive. Yes, 11. I typed 11 quite a lot in this paragraph. 11 is an extremely persistent number! After 11 years, this guide came into existence. As a matter of a fact, this paragraph has 11 sentences and eleven 11s! You are counting the 11s now, aren’t you? I bet you think I typed this last sentence to conform to my own claim, but you would be wrong. In order to stop this guide from becoming a trilogy on playing LOTRO, I will attempt to keep the information short and sweet, while giving links to more detailed information on the topics. (For those time travellers beyond the year 2018, I apologize for any and all links that stopped working. Please Google your question. I found that Google will accurately link the guides you need. Google knows its mathematics.) You can click on the ‘Back to Contents’ button on the bottom of each page in order to go back to the table of content on page 1. Basic game vocabulary 15G/15g: Gold (In this case, 15 gold) Adds: enemies that attack you after you've begun a fight with another enemy. (Usually spawn after starting a fight with the boss) AFAIK: as far as I know AFK: Away From Keyboard. Aggro: (aggravation) can be used as a verb, meaning alerting an enemy so it will start to attack you, or it can be used as a noun, meaning the threat that you are to an enemy in a fight. Basically, if you make enemy angry, enemy kill you! Alts/toons: other characters on the same . AoE attacks: area of effect, attacks that damage multiple foes within a certain range. (Swing Greatsword-Slash-Attack-Of-Death, 3 enemies die) Cod: Cash on Deliver. (Paying for items in mailbox. Requires or higher) Creeps: monster players (Bad guy players) Crit: critical hit / critical success. (All attacks have a small chance to crit. Critical hit = More damage) DoT: damage over time, this will inflict a certain amount of damage every x seconds. (Such as bleeding, or poison effects) DPS: damage per second, this can indicate the player that deals most of the damage in a fellowship, or it can indicate the DPS-value of a weapon. (Also the amount of DPS the player can do Freeps: stands for free peoples, meaning the normal characters in Middle-Earth (dwarf - elf - hobbit – human –beorn –high elf) These are the ‘good guy’ players. Gold Sellers: People who attempt to sell in-game items or gold for real life money. This is illegal. If you buy from them, you can get banned from playing LOTRO! If you see a gold seller (they are quite obvious, obnoxious and persistent), right click his name (in the chat box), and click ‘chat’>’Report Harassment’. HoT: heal over time, heals the target for a certain amount of morale (or power if cast by a LoreMaster) over time. ICMR: in-combat morale regeneration

(Level 115 at the time of writing) LI: Legendary Item (Level 45+ special weapon/equipment) Loot: Items you pick up by killing mobs or opening treasure chests. LP/TP: Lotro Points (Points used in the in-game store. This was previously called TP – Turbine Points) Mob: creature that you can attack. (Normally a mob of creatures attacking you) NPC: non player character (Not played by a person) PUG: Pick Up Group. (See more on this at Raids) PvMP: Player vs Monster-Player. (I do not play PvMP, so it will not be covered in this guide) Root: a skill that causes the target to become unable to move for a short amount of time. Attacking is still possible though. Solo: to solo/having soloed something means you did it alone. Usually refers to one person finishing group content alone. This can be quite challenging. Tank: The person who takes most of the damage in a fellowship to protect players with lower defence. TL; DR/tl; dr: too long; didn’t read Wipe: Refers to the whole fellowship or raid dying. Can be used to say the whole group died: “We wiped 10 times before killing the sickle-fly” or to ask the whole group to die: “Please wipe guys, we failed the do-not-lose-the-one-ring challenge” WTB: want to buy WTS: want to sell XP: Experience

Beorning: bear/beorn Burglar: burg Captain: cappy/cap Champion: champ/chimp/chump/chomp Guardian: guard/tank (The guard would only be called tank if it is the only tank in the group. This goes for any other class within a certain role.) Hunter: Hunt/taxi/Huntard (Extremely rude, use with caution!) Lore-Master: LM/Lag-Master Minstrel: mini Rune-keeper: RK/rune Warden: warden/ward/deus inter homines Please note that the nicknames in red are just jokes used in-game for some classes.

Enemy colour, level and difficulty In every zone, you will encounter a lot of creatures. Some are friendly, you can recognize them by their green or yellow morale bar, but most are hostile. Creatures with a yellow morale bar will not attack you until you attack them, creatures with an orange-reddish morale bar will attack you when you come too close (either immediately or after threatening). Creatures that have the ability to engage in combat (when you see numbers in morale and power bars) have names that can come in 9 different colours:
Grey: out-levelled, 9 or more levels below yours Green: very easy, 6-8 levels below yours Light blue: easy, 3-5 levels below yours Blue: regular, 1-2 levels below yours White: regular, equal level or 1 level difference Yellow: regular, 1-2 levels above yours Orange: hard, 3-5 levels above yours Red: very hard: 5-7 levels above yours Purple: 8 or more levels above yours, don’t try this because you won’t stand a chance! Your miss chance will be increased dramatically so you will barely damage the enemy and he will kill you in no time! Run, or sacrifice your life, so your fellowship can survive!
The colour of the ring around an NPC’s head shows you his/her rank. Higher ranked enemies deal more damage and have better defences & morale. In climbing order:
Green: Swarm Blue: Neutral Orange: Signature Orange mixed with green: Rare Signature Orange + Eye of Sauron = Elite Orange mixed with green + Eye of Sauron = Rare Elite Orange + Eye of Sauron + 4 spikes = Elite Master Orange mixed with green + Eye of Sauron + 4 spikes = Rare Elite Master Orange + Eye of Sauron + 6 spikes = Nemesis Orange + Flaming Eye of Sauron = Arch Nemesis

Fellowships, Instances, Skirmishes, Epic Battles and Raids Fellowship: A fellowship is a group of 1-6 players playing together.
You can right-click a character’s portrait (picture) or name, and click invite to fellowship, in order to form a fellowship. A fellowship cannot hold more than 6 players. (See raids in order to play with more) To talk with your fellowship, create a new chat tab (or use existing) and change the filters, so ‘Fellowship’ is checked. Type /f message in order to talk with your fellowship, in your chosen chat tab. Change message, with your message. All players within a fellowship gain experience from a kill (provided that they are at maximum 119m away from killed mob). Each player gets the same amount he would when killing the mob alone. When 120m or more away from the killed mob, you will not get any reward! Loot basically works the same as experience, each player gets his ‘random’ loot from the mobs. Loot items that are within chests work differently though. (They follow loot rules, see below) If you wish to understand loot rules and loot quality, visit this link: http://www.guildsanctuary.com/forum/index.php?topic=437.0 (The information is old, but still seems to still be relevant at this point in time.) I recommend most players to always use round-robin with need/greed/ or roll/. Free for all and master looter are very situational and should not normally be used. You can leave loot quality at uncommon. The only downside to playing in a fellowship is that LOTRO becomes easier. (So, get yourself a fellowship, and begin the ‘easy’ *author manically laughs* journey to Mordor!)
Instances: To quote the wiki: “Instances are sections of the game separated out of the main world
for quests or story-telling as public dungeons, private fellowship, solo dungeons, skirmishes or massive raids.” You unlock them at level 20, and you can do them from anywhere. Physically being at the instance entrance is not required. Just press Ctrl + J and choose your instance. (Some instances require you to visit the instance location once to unlock it)
Instances can be done solo, with a fellowship, or with a raid. Each instance has his own player size. (From 1 player to 24) If you play an instance with less that the player size, it will be more difficult. Raids, skirmishes and Epic Battles are found in the same tab as instances. See information on them below.
Skirmishes: Skirmishes are special instances where you can summon a ‘skirmish recruit’ NPC to help you fight. You unlock skirmishes at level 20, after you complete the quest chain that the skirmish captain gives you. The skirmish captain can be located at any skirmish camp. Epic Battles: To quote the wiki once again: “Epic Battles are a new (quite old…) combat mechanic introduced in November 2013 as part of Helm’s Deep. While they are special instanced battles, unlike skirmishes or raids, which focus on small scale tactical combat, Epic Battles are more concerned with strategic combat across the whole battlefield. They introduce a number of new (old) game mechanics, including siege weapons, leading Rohirrim soldiers and death streaks, the efficiency of which is improved by acquiring and spending trait points in the three new roles.” Epic Battles require the Helm’s Deep expansion, but some of the battles are available for all players. I will not be giving much information on epic battles; as they cause lag, are tedious, obsolete and are one of my least favourite parts of LOTRO. Raids: Raids are found in the same place as instances, and work the same way, with a few exceptions:
A raid is done with 12-24 players (Although some exceptional players have soloed raids. Soloing raids is not how they were intended to be played, and is not worth the time. It’s a fun challenge though.) Level cap raids are the ‘in-thing’. This is level cap player’s endgame. (The game is far from over at that point though. The word endgame would be better understood as endlevel.) Some updates might change endgame raiding into flower picking, for a brief time, before introducing the new raid. This is normal, developers make mistakes.
How to form a raid:
You can right-click a character’s portrait (picture) or name, and click invite to fellowship, in order to form a fellowship. A fellowship cannot hold more than 6 players. (To talk with your fellowship, create a new chat tab (or use existing) and change the filters, so ‘Fellowship’ is checked. After you have your fellowship, Right-Click your character portrait, click Fellowship>Convert to raid (Only the leader of the fellowship can do this. The person who forms the fellowship is the leader) Type /ra message in order to talk with your raid, in your chosen chat tab. Change message, with your message. to have the raid filter checked, in order to see messages sent to the raid.
Raids and instances have difficulty tiers:
Tier 1 is Easy Tier 2 is Medium (or Hard, if there are only 2 tiers) Tier 3 is Hard
Higher tiers have increased difficulty. Higher tiers have better rewards and more enemies. (More enemies also means more xp)

Raid challenges: Some raids have challenges: (Some challenges require a higher tier)
A raid challenge is a special quest within the raid. Completing this quest gives better rewards. This quest increases difficulty, and can EASILY fail. This is why some raiders get so serious. They have to, if they wish to succeed. This is NOT AN EXCUSE FOR RUDENESS. Be Serious, Be Polite. T2C means Tier 2 challenge, and usually refers to the current newest raid at level cap, on tier 2, with the intent of completing the challenge mode.
Raids require lots of teamwork, and good diversity in classes. There are many guides as to what configuration is optimal. Although, if all the players are skilled, they can run with a non-optimal group configuration, and win. Please do not quote me on that if you try it and fail. Both tier 1 and tier 2 raids have required/recommended statistic caps (meaning the number is the highest it can go) I will NOT cover this. Please find a more specific guide. You can also use Titan-Bar plugin to check if you reached cap. If you wish to do some serious, difficult stuff, such as T2C raids:
a good kin (There are many, posting their adverts in world chat. No, not the goldseller advert, the other one.)
Avoid PUGs when or if possible. A PUG is a Pick Up Group (Playing with people outside kin and friends list, strangers) o
PUGs quite often have a non-optimal group setup, with unskilled, or poorly geared players. This makes T2 and T2C practically impossible; and T1 unnecessarily difficult. Players who use Valar Packages (Store, Instant level boosts) and start playing PUGs, without knowing their own skills, spoil the experience.
o
Some people who lead PUG groups know how to choose their groups, and can do the content as well as any organized kin can.
o
You will often see these leaders telling you ‘sorry, you need better gear’, or ‘sorry, we already have 4 hunters’. Do not despair (Use those hope tokens!)
Ask someone for advice on armouring yourself, and getting raid-ready. The leader is just saying that he expects that you can improve that sturdy dwarf!
I will NOT go into more detail on raiding requirements, optimal class, optimal race, rotation, etc. This changes with each update. Please ask players in-game or search for a guide online.
Raiding, and getting raid-ready is not as difficult as it sounds, but it is a time-consuming process.

Making some extra gold: (New players) o Open up crafting recipes before selling for extra gold! o If you pick up a Sturdy Steel Key, sell it on auction. (Check the sell price at the auction house, or ask someone) o If there is a festival ongoing, see if one of the vendors will exchange tokens for essence reclamation scrolls. These scrolls sell for can be sold for a lot of gold. (Once again, ask someone for the sell price.) This works for any in-demand cap-level item available during festivals. o At level 20, go to the South Barrow-Downs in Bree-Land. Look for the cave called Haudh Iarchith (35.1 S, 55.1 W). Kill all mobs in here (I recommend you bring friends) The mobs normally spawn faster than they can get killed. This is good for both experience, and farming gold. Sell the reputation items you find on the auction house. All the trash loot you pick up will also net you a few gold. (Yes, GOLD, you poor hobbit.) Some useful combat options (In ‘Options’, under ‘Combat Options’): o To automatically target enemies: (No TAB-pressing) o Go to options, search “auto target” o At ‘Combat Options’, tick Auto Target Enemies o NOT recommended for ranged classes, such as hunter and rune-keeper. (You will, quite often, target the wrong enemy. And bring a whole mob of monsters unto your hapless fellowship! Be a good boy/girl and press TAB) o Show Assist Window: This window shows someone in your raid that is assigned raid assist target. Whatever he targets will show up in this window. This is helpful for everyone attacking one target. Or in some cases all healers healing one target. Suggested to use ‘Enable skill target forwarding’ in combat options, with the assist window. This allows you to click on the assist target (an ally), and any skill you use will be used on your target’s target. (Your ally’s target.) RICH GUYS: (No, my poor hobbit, 800G will not do…) o Buy 'Gift of the Valar' (1-50) at level 49. (or level 6) o Buy 'Blessing of the Valar Upgrade' (50-95) at level 94. (or level 50) o Buy 'Aria of the Valar Upgrade' (95-105) at level 104. (or level 95) o Repeat this process for any future level cap increases. o This is done for the bonus virtues. o This saves a lot of time with getting your needed virtues!

Plugins Manage and plugins from one place: Lotro-Plugin-Compendium http://www.lotrointerface.com/s/info663-LOTROPluginCompendium.html A plugin is an UNOFFICIAL but LEGAL alterations of LOTRO’s Interface (UI). The developers allow it, and some players (especially raiders) consider a few plugins essential (My must-have plugins). I will not be adding images; this guide is taking up many pages already. Green means I consider the plugin useful to have. Red means I consider the plugin to be essential. Please note that this is all my personal opinion. You can choose to use none of these plugins, or all of them. Recommended Plugins:
BuffBars Shows effects on your character, with duration, and name. This is a lot easier to read than the effects jumping around under your character’s portrait. MUST-HAVE for most players that do raids. This is USEFUL FOR LEVELING PLAYERS TOO! Right-Click the new items on your screen and click options, to customize BuffBars to your liking.
Festival Buddy A plugin with information on all the festivals, from tokens, to vendor items.
Group Manager Group Manager can be used to quickly rebuild a fellowship or raid. It stores a list of all players in your fellowship with buttons to invite green buttons or dismiss red buttons them. Players that are currently in the fellowship are displayed in green text otherwise they are displayed in red text. Very useful plugin to quickly re-invite a fellowship/raid after disbanding. You do this to reset an instance, a.k.a. farming Thorog.
Item Treasury You want to link an item to buy, but you don’t have it in your inventory? This is THE app for you – This app has a list of all items in game. You can link any item, with the amount you want in chat.
Palantir Have you ever died because you forgot to look at your health bar, or did not notice your morale dropping? Is that even a question? This plugin adds a pretty (and movable) health and mana bar, which fades away out of combat. You can move the bars as well.

Titan-Bar You can view all your alt-characters’ inventory from without switching characters! View you and your alts’ vault. Once again without switching characters! o

Seeing if your stats are t1 or t2 capped for the raid! (This mostly concerns level cap players – Level 115 at the time of writing)
I would suggest that you make the background for Titan-Bar transparent.
To do this, Right-Click the bar at the top of your screen and click “Set back color”. (Yes, Americans cannot spell colour, leave them be. Noah Webster tricked them.)
Make sure the “Apply color to all elements” checkbox is checked, and click the button called “Transparent”. All done.
Travel Window Saves your Travel Skills inside a tooltip. This saves a lot of space on your skill-bar and screen; and looks nice. This is a very useful plugin, but you can leave it if you like travel skills on your skill-bar. With this plugin, change the settings; so it will show the icons, and not a worded list: o
To do this, right click the ‘Travel’ Window in an open spot, Click ‘Mode’, then click ‘Icon Grid’.
o
You also need to disable Milestone Skill 2-12 if you have not purchased those.
o
To do this, Right Click, ‘Travel’ window, go to the ‘Select’ (Look top center, right of ‘General’, left of ‘Sort’)
Disable ‘Return Home’ 2-12
Also disable ‘ House’, if you don’t have one.
I suggest you change Opacity sliders to your liking (Makes the icon and travel window more or less transparent) Min transparency is when your mouse is not hovering over it. Max transparency is when your mouse is hovering over it.
These sliders are within the Travel window, Options, General. They look like small bars with weird arrows at the left and right)

All the icons at the top of the screen, are a part of Titan-Bar. Do not mind my unstable internet connection; I had multiple browser tabs open. Notice the new ‘skin’ on the experience bar, skill-slot bar, mini-map and my character portrait. This is all a part of the JRR The White Hand “Short” skin. (Reader: “Hey, why are you so poor? And why are you playing Gambler?! You gambled away all your money again, didn’t you?!! Most of all, why are you still level 21?!!! Types There are three Types available to new players in Lotro today, Free to Play, , and VIP (subscribed). They give different benefits and bonuses. I will just give a quick overview of the types, please read more here: https://lotrowiki.com/index.php/_Types
Free-to-play (F2P)
All new s start as F2P. This type has many restrictions, but is still playable. There are quite a few players who cannot pay, and play LOTRO as F2P. Players can play for free with significant restrictions and remove those restrictions by making a purchase in the in-game Lotro Store with LOTRO Points (LP).
You will automatically be upgraded to player status with your first purchase of something for real world money. has more benefits than F2P, but less than VIP. Your will never go back to F2P after becoming .
VIP
VIP status is one of three types of a new LOTRO player can have today. As a player with a VIP , you have unlimited access to all game content; only expansions must be purchased. VIP is another way of describing a subscriber.

Quest-Pack and Expansion order For those of you wondering in which order to buy/play all the areas in the game, this information should help you a bit. Please note that there are quest-packs with intersecting levels, meaning you could level up all the way to cap without owning all the quest-packs. I personally have found that the expansions are an important part of the game, which should not be skipped. This information is just for levelling. Please note that everything here is my personal opinion, you can buy and play the quest-packs and expansions as you wish. You could even play without any quest-packs or expansions, although this is tedious, and no-one would recommend it. Quest-Packs listed in bold are the ones I recommend you get.
Lone-Lands: 20-35 o Free to all players. o I find myself leaving here at level 30. The 30-35 content is group content. o I recommend you go to Evendim once you reach level 30. The North Downs: 24-32 o An area mostly played by VIP players, as other players just play in the Lone-Lands. o Do not buy North Downs unless you really want to play there. Lone-Lands will give you what you need. Evendim: 30-40 o The first quest-pack to buy. Do not skip this one! o This quest-pack has a lot of quests and will easily get you to level 40. The Trollshaws: 35-40 o If you are going for the bare minimum, skip the Trollshaws. Evendim will get you to level 40. o This is a nice quest-pack to have, if you got tired of the quests in Evendim, and want something new. o Also, Rivendell is here. The Misty Mountains: 40-45 o If you are going for the bare minimum, skip the Misty Mountains. Angmar will level you from 40-50. o Once again, this is a nice quest-pack to have, but not recommended if you are low on LP. o You need to go through the Trollshaws to enter the Misty Mountains. This can be skipped if you talk to Gandalf, in one of the Prancing Pony’s rooms, in Bree. Accept his quest, and he will teleport you to Rivendell (this is the closest point to the Misty Mountains). Cancel the quest, so you can use it to travel there again.

Angmar: 40-50 o The second quest-pack to buy. Do not skip this one! o Scary place. Home of the Witch-King. o Difficult place for inexperienced players. I recommend you take it slowly and make your character stronger before venturing into Angmar. o Angmar has a lot of group content. You can still get to level 50 while avoiding group content, or you can find a fellowship and do it. o Once you get used to it, you can easily get yourself from 40-50. Forochel: 44-50 o A possible alternative to Angmar, although I would not recommend doing so. o You can use Forochel in conjunction with Angmar to get to level 50. The levelling from level 40-50 can be quite slow. (This was end-game at one point in time) Eregion: 48-53 o I normally come to Eregion at level 45 and level myself here, before going to Moria. o I would not recommend inexperienced players to go here before level 48. o Doing quests and fighting mobs above your own level can be quite a difficult task. If you find that you cannot get to level 50 with Angmar, buy Forochel (44-50), or Eregion (4853), depending on how many levels you need, and which area interests you more. Moria: 51-60 o The first expansion to buy. Do not skip this one! o You guys Moria, from the movies and books? o And the Balrog? o Well, introducing Moria! o It is possible to start Moria at level 45 and leave at level 55. (This makes the game quite a bit more difficult) Lothlórien: 60 o What, just level 60 quests? How? What? o Let me say one thing first, Lothlórien is my favourite map in LOTRO. o If you decided to shoot yourself in the foot by starting Moria at level 45, and leaving at level 55, Lothlórien is for you. o If you left Moria, and aren’t level 60 yet, Lothlórien is for you! o Most of the quests are repeatable dailies. Meaning you can level up with quite a bit with level 60-only quests o Lothlórien helps you get ready for Mirkwood. Mirkwood: 60-65 o The second expansion to buy. o You can choose between Mirkwood and Enedwaith if you just wish to level. o There is a boat in Lothlórien that will take you to Mirkwood. Try to swim across at your own risk! o Bring a torch. Enedwaith: 60-65 o An alternative to Mirkwood. o If you are scared of the dark, get Enedwaith instead of Mirkwood. Dunland: 65-75 o The third expansion to buy. Also known as the Rise of Isengard.

Vault o Your character’s storage unit. o A separate vault is available to each character. o You can buy more slots with silver/gold. (also, per character) Shared Storage o You need to unlock shared storage in the store. o The shared storage works the same as your house storage. All characters can access the same storage location. Wardrobe o You need to unlock wardrobe in the store. o You can ‘save’ cosmetics in the wardrobe. o Drag cosmetics from the wardrobe into your cosmetic slot, to use it as a cosmetic. The cosmetic in your wardrobe does not disappear if you drag it into your character’s cosmetic slot. o The same wardrobe space is accessed by all your characters.
Character Portrait Frames You will notice that some players have a different character portrait frame. These are acquired by playing for 1 year+, or some special circumstances (Such as buying VIP once). You need a or higher to use these frames.
This frame is the 1 year frame. (You unlock it after your is 1 year old, during the anniversary event).
