From the sketch it may be seen that the minimum gage is that dimension which allows all elements of the bolt assembly to clear the fillet of the beam. The maximum gage would be that dimension which causes the minimum edge distance to be achieved. The tabulated gages are those which have been accepted in common usage for many years as workable or usable. Workable or usable gages are historic in their origin. They are simply a compromise between the minimum gage possible and the maximum gage possible and they work on all flanges in a single group. Most common bolt sizes will fit using the tabulated gages, except on the narrowest flanges. The gages suggested in the table may be adjusted to suit the connection being made. If connecting a smaller flange to a larger flange, or if prying force were the major consideration, the gage may be reduced to the minimum. If connecting a framed beam to a column flange where bolt driving clearance is the major consideration, the gage may be increased up to the maximum. Any gage in between the minimum and the maximum may be used at any time.
